Jane Charilaou is a writer and cultural theorist from Manchester, England.
An unapologetic feminist and lifelong advocate of gender equality, she graduated from Manchester University with 1st class BA honours degree in English and North American literature, specializing in African-American women’s writing and feminist literary theory.
After graduating from university, Jane went on to work as a research assistant at the University of Manchester on a long-running study investigating child language acquisition, funded by Germany’s prestigious Max Planck Institute. It was here that she began a lifelong friendship with psychologist Dr. Jeannine Goh, project manager of the study and contributory editor of Pleasure Unplugged.
She continued her language studies at night school, graduating from Manchester College of Arts and Technology a year later with a TESOL diploma whilst teaching herself Spanish, which she now speaks fluently.
Still fascinated by the power of language, Jane returned to Manchester University a couple of years later, reading for an MA postgraduate degree in Post-1900 Stories, Theories and Cultures, graduating with distinction in 2007. It was during this time that she discovered poststructuralist, psychoanalytical theory and the work of radical feminist thinkers, Helene Cixous and Julia Kristeva. These two academics were to have a profound influence on Jane’s conviction that writing by women could be a revolutionary act. She was also very much inspired by the work of Marxist cultural theorist, Professor Terry Eagleton, who she was fortunate enough to count amongst her tutors.
After spending a few years travelling extensively and having almost certainly more fun than is legal, Jane finally settled down in Ibiza, Spain and began working as a professional copywriter, sub-editor and content manager for a large online tourist magazine. After two years, she decided to take a break from full-time commercial writing to write freelance and to create this collaborative work, written by women, on the subject of female pleasure.
She is the very proud mother of one fully-grown, amazing man and the equally proud grandmother of a mini one! She continues to live in her beloved Ibiza and writes for several publications based on the island, both in print and online.
